Categories : A Culture of Listening Listening to God

A few months ago I wrote about the time God told me to get a life. It felt like a punch to the gut.

Later I realized I wasn’t the only mom who felt like she’d lost herself. Maybe you can relate. Maybe you’ve sacrificed to be there for your family, and later felt the person who was there for your family wasn’t even you anymore.

If you read God’s words to me, “If you want to lay down your life, first you need to get a life”, and thought, “Yeah, but how do I do that?” here’s one answer.

mother'sday

Whether you’re a mom who wants to be more of your true self, or you know a mom who needs to (re)discover who God made her,  or you’re struggling to discover your true identity apart from the expectations of your own mom,  this is pretty much the best Mother’s Day present you can give or receive.

Because if you’re a mom, you know that more than anything, you want your kids to be who God created them to be. And if you have a mom, you know you want her sacrifices to be worth it.

Self discovery takes time and effort, and (especially if you’ve been in self-denial mode for a while) it feels selfish. But nothing could be further from the truth. The real you is all we really ever wanted.

There are many ways to (re)discover your true identity. But there are some things about this path that work better than anything else I’ve seen. Last year I shared this process as a series of blog posts. Recently I went back over them added crucial new insights, and compiled them into a beautiful and easy to read e-book.

The only thing missing now is you.

Hannah just downloaded this and dove right in. Wanted to come back and comment..I Feel like my verse is Romans 8:28. That seemed odd to me, as it doesn’t seem “directive” and that’s what I thought I needed/wanted. This verse does however direct me to remember that He is always going to work things for my good. It lets me relax and know that God is good. And constant. And unchanging. And for me. And I love to reflect on the tough/bad things in my life that He has redeemed. The perspective of this life verse brings things in to very sharp focus.

Kellie, Thank you so much for sharing your experience, and your verse. It will be exciting to see what other insights God has for you as you listen and approach the other exercises through the lens of this truth. Blessings on your quest for the true you!
